G-as-in-Ghost?

By Neil Dodds
09 October, 2007

The much-rumoured GPhone might not be a handset 'iPhone killer' after all, but an operating system which can be downloaded and used on other mobile phone models.

According to a report in the British Daily Telegraph, Google engineers have been working for two years on a secret Google phone project. Rather than the expected handset (and mock-ups have been circulating for months), it is likely to be an application which allows users access to Google's suite of online goodies.

The newspaper reports that the US giant hopes to break into the mobile phone advertising market, perhaps funding its mobile services with ads.

Google is also reportedly considering a $4.6 billion bid for wireless airwaves at a US federal auction, which could see the online search company become a mobile phone carrier, or service provider. Could free calls and online services be funded by advertising?
